The UK government has announced measures to place local communities at the heart of the planning system as part of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. The measures aim to build the right homes in the right places with the right infrastructure, ensuring the environment is protected and giving local people a greater say on where new development should be placed.

Government’s help-to-buy mortgage scheme to be scrapped by end of the year. Other help-to-buy schemes will continue though until 2020. One of the main schemes the government will be backing now is the rent-to-buy scheme.

Over a quarter of free Landmark schools delay opening

Statistics released under the Freedom of Information laws show that over a quarter of the landmark schools announced last year have delayed opening their doors. Constant delays have prompted the Department for Education (DfE) to overhaul how it awards opening dates for new projects. The government has now set up a private arm, LocatED, to take over purchasing new sites; this should allow sites to be purchased quicker and cheaper. The Department of Education have a pledge to open 500 new schools by 2020 and the one at NEV could be one of them.

Theresa May to lift ban on grammar schools

Theresa May’s commitment to lifting the ban on grammar schools was announced at the Conservative Party conference earlier this week in Birmingham. The main aim of scrapping the ban is to open the doors to better education for a wider range of children. The proposed secondary school on NEV could be brought in line with Theresa May’s vision.

UK faces shortfall of 1.8m rental homes

The UK government has been warned by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors that there is a shortfall of 1.8 million rental homes in the UK. The private sector has taken over from the councils and housing associations as the biggest provider of rental homes but stamp duty is having an impact on this now. The stamp duty tax is being called into action along for local authorities holding brownfield sites to be encouraged to release land for build-to-rent developments.
